The steady bleat of the all-clear did not sound. I’m bored, I’m hungry. When are we going to get out of here? The Occupation had turned them all into squalling children. I’m bored, I’m hungry. They were waiting.

Waiting for the Allies to reach Cherbourg.

Waiting for the Allies to reach Paris.

Waiting for the Allies to reach Berlin.

Waiting to taste butter again.

Waiting for their sons to come home.

Waiting for their sons not to come home.

Waiting for a stone-carrying mob to come shuffling through the eons, out of Leviticus, rocks ready to lob, this time not at fornicators, defilers of the Sabbath, but at killers of Jews and Communists, those who had collaborated with the killers of Jews and Communists.

Waiting to be done with waiting.

Henri’s head lolled forward, then jerked up, which woke him.

“I wasn’t asleep,” he declared, as if sleeping were a crime.
